BEFORE YOU START
  • Define the decision before choosing a service.
  • Measure exposure to answer workplace questions; use a clinical assessment to answer individual hearing questions.
  • Where both are needed, give each service an owner and a separate deliverable.

Start with the decision you need to make

The Philippine Occupational Safety and Health Center includes noise in its work environment measurements. The workplace is the focus: an assessor can investigate a particular source or characterize exposure during a work task. Audiometry measures a person’s hearing at different pitches. An audiogram cannot tell you the noise level of the new packing machine.

Ask the supervisor who raised the concern what they would do differently with the answer. A decision about moving equipment belongs in the exposure brief. A question about someone’s hearing belongs with a qualified clinical professional. It is reasonable to pursue both at the same time.

Route the request in one minute

These examples are starting points for a discussion with your safety officer and occupational health team. Ask the professional to choose the method; the coordinator’s job is to describe the work accurately.

  • “Which stations are loudest?” Describe the layout and equipment to a workplace noise assessor. Ask what measurements and map or report would address the question.
  • “What does a maintenance worker encounter as they move between stations?” Describe the worker’s route and shift. Ask how personal exposure will be assessed.
  • “An employee is having difficulty hearing conversations.” Offer a private route to the company clinician or hearing service. An equipment survey cannot assess that person’s hearing.

Write two deliverables where you need two answers

For the hypothetical packing line, the safety officer could ask for a report on noise at the operator and nearby inspection positions during representative production. The clinical lead could separately decide which employees need hearing appointments and how to communicate with them.

List each request with its own owner, date, cost, and expected output. Ask which decisions the report can support and what its limitations will be. If one supplier offers both services, still ask it to describe them separately. This makes it easier to see whether you have an unanswered question when the quotations arrive.
